Antimicrobial use in the community falls overall, but use in aged care on the rise

Earlier this month, the Commission released Antimicrobial use in the community: 2023. This report provides an analysis of antimicrobials supplied under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and Repatriation PBS. It features antimicrobial use in aged care and by local area.

Key findings

Despite an encouraging gradual decline in overall antimicrobial use in the community, there was an 11% increase in use in residents of aged care homes from 2022 to 2023.

Furthermore, antimicrobial use is notably higher for older Australians who reside in aged care homes than for those in the community, with almost three-quarters of aged care home residents receiving at least one antimicrobial prescription last year.

The report provides information for aged care prescribers, organisations and other staff and carers on antimicrobial use and the priority areas for improvement.
