Essential elements for safe and high-quality end-of-life care

Today, the Commission has released the second edition of the National Consensus Statement: Essential elements for safe and high-quality end-of-life care (Consensus Statement).

The Consensus Statement describes nine guiding principles that provide a best practice approach to caring for people approaching the end of their life.

Following a widespread consultation process, this edition has been broadened to ensure its relevance to all healthcare services, including primary and community care and residential aged care facilities.

Where does this apply?

The Consensus Statement is part of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service Standards and sits in the Comprehensive Care Standard. It applies to all services where health care is provided to people that are approaching the end of their life, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Hospices
  • Residential aged care facilities
  • Home settings

Who is this for?

  • Healthcare workers who provide care to people approaching the end of their life
  • Healthcare service executives and managers
  • Clinical education and training providers, including universities and professional colleges
  • Health professional registration, regulation and accreditation agencies
  • Planners, program managers and policymakers working on end-of-life care projects
