The Commission coordinates the National Hand Hygiene Initiative (NHHI) to prevent and reduce healthcare-associated infections in Australian healthcare settings.
The NHHI uses a multimodal approach to improve hand hygiene compliance among healthcare workers, which includes direct observational auditing by hand hygiene auditors who have undergone specific training and revalidation processes.
On 1 June 2023, the Commission released new hand hygiene auditor training pathways, revalidation requirements for hand hygiene auditors and support resources.
The aim was to standardise knowledge and skills, improve access to training, develop an upskilling pathway from Hand Hygiene Auditors to Hand Hygiene Auditor Educators, and reduce administrative tasks.
