Rebound in antimicrobial use ahead of AURA 2023 launch

Next month the Commission is releasing AURA 2023: Fifth Australian report on antimicrobial use and resistance in human health, showing trends and analyses across acute and community care settings.

Ahead of the AURA 2023 release on 16 November, a new technical report, with local area data, has revealed an increase in antimicrobials supplied under the PBS and RPBS* last year.

Antimicrobial use increased by nearly 10% from 2021 to 2022, which followed the dramatic decline of more than 25% in the two years prior, from 2019 to 2021.

Despite this increase, antimicrobial use remains well below pre-pandemic levels and provides an opportunity to sustain improvements in appropriate antimicrobial prescribing.
