Launch of the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework

The National Clinical Trials Governance Framework (Governance Framework) was launched by Dr Brendan Murphy, Secretary of the Australian Government Department of Health, on 24 May 2022 at the annual ARCS conference.

The launch of the Governance Framework provided the opportunity to communicate the benefits of the Governance Framework for the clinical trials sector and the community more broadly. Dr Murphy was accompanied by individuals who participated in the development and pilot of the Governance Framework, who will also have a key role in its implementation.

Update on the implementation of the Governance Framework

Assessment to the Governance Framework will commence from January 2023 under the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme. Processes for accreditation to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards are well established under the requirements of the AHSSQA scheme and these principles will apply whenever assessment to the NSQHS Standards occurs.

The Commission is currently updating the supporting resources to implement the Governance Framework. The Commission is working with accrediting agencies in preparation for assessment to the Governance Framework. The Commission will continue to provide advice to health services regarding the assessment process.
