Delirium and the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards
The Delirium Clinical Care Standard is relevant to several actions within the NSQHS Standards including:
- Clinical Governance Standard: Actions 1.27b and 1.28
- Comprehensive Care Standard: Action 5.29
- Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Standard: Actions 8.05, 8.06 and 8.07.
The advisory AS22/01 - Advice on implementing the updated Delirium Clinical Care Standard clarifies requirements around implementation of the updated Delirium Clinical Care Standard for accreditation to the NSQHS Standards.
Health service organisations are expected to implement the NSQHS Standards in a way that suits the clinical services provided and their associated risks. Assessments based on the 2021 Delirium Clinical Care Standard will commence from 1 September 2022.

A set of indicators has been developed to assist with local implementation of the Delirium Clinical Care Standard.
Detailed specifications are available on METeOR. METeOR is an Australian web-based repository of nationally endorsed data and indicator definitions, hosted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
