What is antimicrobial stewardship?
Antimicrobial medicines agents, such as antibiotics, are important for treating and preventing infections. They have been called the miracle drugs of modern medicine. However, when microbes become resistant to an antimicrobial medicine, it no longer works for treating that infection. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem in healthcare settings and in the community. Antimicrobial stewardship is a set of strategies to ensure that medicines are used appropriately, to reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance.
