Case Study – Tom stays active to reduce pain from knee osteoarthritis
There is a lot going on inside the head of forensic psychologist Tom Buttel when it comes to thinking about how to best manage his knee osteoarthritis. He is an advocate of the Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard, released by the Commission on 15 August 2024.
While he can’t do high-impact sport, 64-year-old Tom keeps active by walking six days a week, cycling and swimming. He is careful with his diet to manage his weight and uses meditation to reduce pain.
More than two million Australians, including many people aged over 45, live with osteoarthritis – a common cause of pain and joint stiffness – particularly in knees, hips and hands.
Released today, the updated national Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard (2024) has a stronger focus on supporting patients with non-surgical interventions, including physical activity, exercise and weight management.
