Communiqué 2: National Sepsis Program Oversight Group – April 2024

This Communiqué provides an update on the second meeting of the National Sepsis Oversight Group (Oversight Group). It may be used by members to update their nominating organisations and other key agencies about the National Sepsis Program Extension (Program Extension).

National Sepsis Oversight Group

The Oversight Group is chaired by Conjoint Associate Professor Carolyn Hullick, Chief Medical Officer at the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.

The Oversight Group met for the second time on 11 April 2024.

Members discussed:

  • How implementation science and human factors expertise can enhance program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ways to engage primary care clinicians in sepsis education noting a range of professional bodies and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations as key stakeholders.
  • The importance of transitions of care between primary and acute health care services when planning clinician education and training.
  • The value of baseline data, outcomes measurement and data mapping to inform quality improvement activities. Also, the importance of mortality data and the challenges associated with understanding the medium and long-term outcomes for sepsis survivors once they have left hospital.
  • Innovations in post-sepsis support and the opportunity to learn from post-cancer models of care which are more well developed.

Following a presentation on the Commission’s revised Emergency Triage Education Kit (ETEK), including sepsis related case studies, members noted that listening to patients, carers and parents is integral to effective triage practice.

Next steps

The Oversight Group requested further information about data linkage and to hear directly from health services developing post sepsis services.
