Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard pilot project

The Commission engaged with primary care, the private healthcare sector and jurisdictions to pilot the Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard across the sectors.

The Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard will be implemented in public and private hospitals and day procedure centres nationally as part of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2nd edition). The Commission engaged primary care, the private healthcare sector and jurisdictions to pilot the Standard across the sectors.

The Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard was piloted at The Alfred, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Brisbane Private Hospital and Liverpool Day Surgery from May to August in 2019. The pilot sites conducted a simulated accreditation against the NSQHS Standards to assess feasibility of the standard.

Each of the pilot sites:

  • Engaged staff in a period of familiarisation with the Colonoscopy CCS
  • Identified changes in practices to meet the requirements of the Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard under the NSQHS Standards
  • Initiated collection of the national dataset for local generation of the quality indicators
  • Reported indicators to relevant clinical teams and to the health service executive
  • Conducted a simulated accreditation against the NSQHS Standards to assess feasibility of the colonoscopy model of care
  • Conducted interviews and succinct surveys for qualitative assessment of the impact and feasibility of the colonoscopy model of care
  • Prepared a report on the pilot including impact on workflows and practices, barriers, lessons learned, resource implications and results from dataset capture and indicator generation.
