Implementation of the Cosmetic Surgery Module
The Cosmetic Surgery Module has been developed for Services that are already accredited to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards. It provides a limited set of additional actions that Services are required to implement to address the specific safety and quality issues that relate to cosmetic surgery.
Organisations completing the NSQHS Standards and the Cosmetic Surgery Module will be assessed in a single assessment process, thereby reducing compliance burden.
The NSQHS Standards (2nd edition) and the Cosmetic Surgery Module
Where cosmetic surgery is performed in a Service already accredited to the NSQHS Standards, that Service will continue to be assessed to the NSQHS Standards but will also be required to implement 20 additional actions that are specific to cosmetic surgery. The 20 additional actions are highlighted in the Cosmetic Surgery Module.
Mapping to the NSQHS Standards (second edition)
The Cosmetic Surgery Standards are aligned to the NSQHS Standards (second edition), which are implemented in all Australian hospitals and day procedure services. Mapping has been undertaken to assist service providers who are already assessed to the NSQHS Standards to implement the Cosmetic Surgery Standards.
Of the 101 actions in the Cosmetic Surgery Standards, this document identifies:
- 81 actions as a full match with actions in the NSQHS Standards
- 9 actions as a partial match, where further implementation activities are required
- 11 actions having no direct match.
Accreditation
To become accredited, Services undergo an assessment to show they have met the requirements of the NSQHS Standards and the Module. Assessments are conducted by independent accrediting agencies, approved by the Commission. Accreditation to the Module will be incorporated into the Service’s next assessment to the NSQHS Standards. As such, the accreditation requirements for the Cosmetic Surgery Module will follow those outlined for the NSQHS Standards in the AHSSQA Scheme.
Implementation resources
The Commission has developed a range of resources to support implementation of the Cosmetic Surgery Module.
