Ensuring correct patient, correct site, correct procedure protocol for other clinical areas
There is consistent evidence that patient/procedure mismatching also occur in areas other than surgery. Protocols have been developed to support matching of patients to their care in the areas of radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy and oral surgery.
Warning
The original Ensuring correct patient, correct site, correct procedure protocol was developed specifically for operating theatres. For surgery, this patient / procedure matching protocol has been superseded by the Surgical Safety Checklist.
History
Anecdotal evidence indicates that take-up of the protocol outside this environment was limited. Although the protocol had not been widely used outside operating theatres, there was consistent evidence that patient/procedure mismatching also occured in areas other than surgery.
In response, the Commission, in conjunction with clinician experts and major clinical groups, developed protocols to support matching of patients to their care in the areas of radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy and oral surgery. These protocols are based on protocols originally developed by NSW Health. The Commission appreciates the assistance of NSW Health in allowing them to be adopted for national use.
