National Standards
Public reporting on hospital performance: NSQHS Standards
You can find out how your hospital performed at their last assessment to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
All Australian hospitals are assessed at least every three years to the NSQHS Standards. This process is known as accreditation.
The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards
The National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) in collaboration with the Australian Government, state and territories, the private sector, clinical experts, patients and carers. The primary aims of the NSQHS Standards are to protect the public from harm and to improve the quality of health care provision. They provide a quality assurance mechanism that tests whether relevant systems are in place to ensure expected standards of safety and quality are met.
The NSQHS Standards describe the level of care you should expect to receive from a health service organisation, in areas that affect the safety and quality of care, and where there is good evidence of how to provide better care.

Accreditation of health services
Accreditation is the process of qualified external reviewer assessing a health service organisation’s compliance with safety and quality standards. The focus is on ensuring safety and quality systems are in place and these are used for continuous quality improvement. An accreditation award provides the community with an assurance that a health service organisation meets expected patient safety and quality standards.
In Australia, all public and private hospitals, day procedure services and most public dental practices must be accredited. Assessment to the NSQHS Standards occurs at least every three years.
Assessments are conducted by independent accrediting agencies, approved by the Commission, as part of the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme. The AHSSQA Scheme is coordinated by the Commission.
