National statement on health literacy

The National statement on health literacy is Australia’s national approach to addressing health literacy.

Australia is one of the few countries that has a national approach to health literacy. This is described in the National Statement on Health Literacy, which was endorsed by all Health Ministers in 2014.

In the National Statement, the Commission proposes a coordinated approach to health literacy based on:

  • Embedding health literacy into systems
  • Ensuring effective communication
  • Integrating health literacy into education.
