Common co-occurring conditions for people with intellectual disability

When compared with the general population, people with intellectual disability have significantly higher physical and psychiatric morbidities.[8],[9],[10],[11],[12]

These co-occurring conditions are related to either a genetic condition, lifestyle risks or social determinants. They include:

  • Sensory impairments
  • Epilepsy
  • Eating (feeding) difficulties and related nutritional complications 
  • Dysphagia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Respiratory illness
  • Gastrointestinal illness
  • Frailty and premature ageing
  • Mental illness
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder 
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
