Definition of intellectual disability
Intellectual disability is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and is ‘characterised by intellectual difficulties as well as difficulties in conceptual, social and practical areas of living’.[4]
People with intellectual disability may also have communication difficulties and physical disabilities related to their neurodevelopmental disorder. Depending on the cause of the disorder, they may have associated health conditions and different healthcare needs.[5] Intellectual disability affects all stages of a person’s life. However, with early intervention, support and adjustments throughout their life stages, people with intellectual disability learn, achieve social and emotional growth, and participate actively in society.5
